The fuel filter prevents dirt and remains from entering the important components of the fuel delivery system. This results in higher performance of the engine. Proper maintenance and replacement of the fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer can help boost the performance of your vehicle by 2% to 4%.
It is important that you change the fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer or when the engine management system tells you it is time to change the fuel filters. You should always change both filters – one is on the frame rail under the driver’s side of the truck and the other is in the engine compartment near the driver’s side firewall. Read the related article to see some of the best fuel filter for the 6.7 Powerstroke and the proper steps in changing the filters.
You may run into performance issues if the fuel filters are not replaced when needed. Sputtering at high speed or a difficult to start truck will be some of the symptoms.
Does Changing Diesel Fuel Filter Improve Performance
A fuel filter is a filter in a fuel line that screens out dirt and rust particles from the fuel, and is normally made into cartridges containing a filter paper. They are found in most internal combustion engines.
Some filters, especially found on diesel engines, are of a bowl-like design which collect water in the bottom (as water is more dense than diesel). The water can then be drained off by opening a valve in the bottom of the bowl and letting it run out, until the bowl contains only diesel. Many diesel fuel filters contain a water sensor to signal to the engine control unit or directly to the driver if the water reaches the warning level. It is especially undesirable for water in fuel to be drawn into a diesel engine fuel system, as the system relies on the diesel for lubrication of the moving parts, and if water gets into a moving part which requires constant lubrication (for example an injector valve), it will quickly cause overheating and unnecessary wear. This type of filter may also include a sensor, which will alert the operator when the filter needs to be drained. In proximity to the diesel fuel filter there might be a fuel heater to avoid the forming of paraffin wax (in case of low temperatures) inside the filtrating element which can stop the fuel flow to the engine.
